Yorkies were bred to hunt rats in the mines of north England. Yorkies were probably developed by Scotsmen working in Yorkshire, England. Piebald Yorkies came about by an accident of genetics in 1984 and are now considered a separate breed, the Biewer Yorkie. Yorkies used to be much larger but have gradually been bred down to become a miniature breed.
