Yorkies were bred to hunt rats in the mines of north England. Piebald Yorkies came about by an accident of genetics in 1984 and are now considered a separate breed, the Biewer Yorkie. Yorkies used to be much larger but have gradually been bred down to become a miniature breed. Yorkies have been popular ladies' lap dogs for many years.
